Even a used Ferrari in Japan can cost up to $100,000 or more, so imagine the combined loss when eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Mercedes are involved in a major crash!
That’s what happened this Sunday to a group of sports car enthusiasts, who were cruising the Chugoku Highway in Yamaguchi prefecture en-route to a supercar meet-up in Hiroshima, ended up in an 14-car pile-up. Police believe the accident was caused when one of the Ferrari drivers tried to change lanes and hit the median. He then spun across the highway, causing other cars to collide to avoid hitting his car. The other drivers’ ability to avoid the crash appeared to be hampered by the fact that the cars were lined up with one another and driving as “couples”.
While police declined to comment on the amount of damage, a tow truck drivers on the scene said it was the most expensive crash site he had ever seen. One estimate put the damage at upwards of $3.85 million. Video of the crash aftermath showed several smashed bright-red Ferraris scattered across the highway.
Fortunately no one was seriously injured, although 10 people were treated for cuts and bruises. It was probably more painful for those involved to see pieces of their cars strewn across the highway — including the owners of other 3 cars who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
